Proper Maintenance Between Cleanings

Skimming leaves off a swimming poolKeeping your pool properly cleaned and maintained is an ongoing job. Even when you hire professionals to help clean your pool for you, there are some tasks that you need to do yourself to help keep your pool clean. If you want to be able to use your pool anytime you want, you need to do some maintenance work to it in between your professional cleaner’s visits. Weekly pool maintenance is a must if you want to keep your pool from deteriorating in between cleanings. The things you need to do are pretty simple but need to be done at least once a week. These include the following:

  • Skimming leaves and debris from your pool’s surface – leaves and other similar debris should be removed from your pool’s surface as often as possible. Don’t wait for these to sink to the bottom of your pool before taking care of them since these will be more difficult to remove by then and will only affect the cleanliness of the water in your pool. Use a net skimmer to do this.
  • Check your water circulation and system regularly – even when your pool is not in use, turning on your pool’s circulation system a few hours each day can help keep the water in it from deteriorating. Just run your pump and let the circulation system do its work of distributing the chemicals your water needs to keep itself from stagnating. Also, make sure that all parts of this system are in proper working condition and are kept clean.
  • Check your skimmer and filters weekly – if your pool is in constant use, checking your skimmers and filters should also be done more frequently. Remove any debris that you find in your skimmer basket once a week, or more often if the pool is being used regularly. You should also do the same for your pool’s filters
  • Check pool’s chemistry on a weekly basis – another thing you need to do in between your professional pool cleaner’s scheduled visits is to check the pH levels of your pool’s water. If you are unsure how to do this, the next time your pool cleaner comes over, ask them what to do and what tools you need to have to be able to check your water’s chemistry while they are not around.
  • Brush and wipe tiles clean every week – another weekly task that you should not neglect to do when you have a pool is to wipe down and brush your pool’s tiles. This will help remove any possible buildup that will be more difficult to handle should you neglect to do this regularly.
