Replacing Your Pool Skimmer

Pool Filter Basics

Having a swimming pool in your backyard is a luxury that many people don’t get to enjoy, but what people may not realize is that with this luxury comes great responsibility. Keeping a pool clean and free of contaminants requires a lot of work and pool maintenance costs can skyrocket if you don’t know what you are doing. One of the things that a pool should have in order for it to function properly and to stay as swimmable as possible is a pool skimmer.

What is a Pool Skimmer?

A pool skimmer is what you see on the side of your pool, near the top of the water, and it resembles a mouth that sucks in water. It works by sucking in water and sends the water through a filtration system, after which the clean water is then pumped back into the pool. This helps keep your pool clean of debris and contaminants.

The number of pool skimmers a pool can have depends on the size of the pool. Some swimming pools have as little as one skimmer, while larger pools can have as many as 5 or 6 placed around the pool. Each pool skimmer consists of a few vital components, and these include a weir, basket, lid, and mouth. Each part is vital in keeping your pool clean and your skimmer working as efficiently as it should.

The lid covers the basket and helps keep bigger debris from entering the filtering system, while the mouth sucks in the water from the pool. The weir is the flap that prevents large debris in the water from entering the skimmer, and the basket is where the debris is gathered. The skimmer basket is one of the most important components of the skimmer since it keeps debris from clogging up your pool’s filter.

When to Replace a Pool Skimmer?

How do you know if your skimmer needs replacing? You don’t really need to replace your skimmer that frequently, it is only done if there is a major problem. When a skimmer’s throat (the part that connects the skimmer mouth with the bucket) has a leak, it can be fixed with repair putty. Cracks in the bucket can also be repaired with repair putty.

When the skimmer assembly itself is cracked, this is when a replacement is absolutely necessary. This will require the draining of the pool and the removal of the skimmer assembly from the pool. To do this, you need a professional pool company, like Sterling Pool Service to handle the replacement.
